Heavy Horses at Buckham Fair 2026
The Festival of Heavy Horses celebrated working animals and the people who care for them, from teams in hand and agricultural work to traditional drays.
Visitors could see the horses in the arena and meet them more quietly beyond it—one of the strongest heritage stories of Buckham Fair 2026.

Heavy Horse Show 2026
Buckham Fair 2026 welcomed a brand-new attraction: the Festival of the Heavy Horse, a vibrant celebration of strength, heritage and the remarkable partnership between horse and handler.
Set against the Dorset countryside, the festival brought together heavy horses from across the region and gave visitors a rare chance to meet them up close.

A Tribute to Working Horse Heritage
Heavy horses have played a defining role in Britain’s rural history, and at Buckham Fair 2026 that legacy came to life.
Visitors watched Shires, Clydesdales, Suffolks and North American Belgians demonstrate the power, steadiness and elegance that once made them indispensable to farms, fields and forestry.
Each display honoured the horses, traditional skills and craftsmanship of those who worked alongside them for generations.

Inside the Heavy Horse Village
The Heavy Horse Village gave visitors a closer look into the world of these gentle giants.
Owners and handlers shared their knowledge, answered questions and introduced visitors to their horses throughout the day.
Visitors learned about different breeds, training techniques, harnesses and the day-to-day care that keeps heavy horses thriving.
The village also hosted its popular farrier demonstration, where visitors watched the age-old skill of shoeing.
The farrier explained each step and the essential role the craft still plays in keeping working horses healthy and sound.

Clydesdale Patrick And His Human Martin Clunes
Martin and his young Clydesdale, Patrick, were also part of the celebration.
Full of character and curiosity, Patrick proved a memorable part of the Heavy Horse festival.

Supporting the Spirit of Buckham
In true Buckham fashion, the Festival of the Heavy Horse was both a tribute to tradition and part of the fair’s fundraising effort.
Every visitor helped Buckham Fair support Dorset County Hospital Charity’s Emergency & Critical Care Appeal.
A Tradition Worth Celebrating
The Festival of the Heavy Horse was a living celebration of heritage, horsepower and heart, and a reminder of our connection to the countryside and the animals that helped shape it.
Equestrian enthusiasts and newcomers alike spent the day learning about these magnificent animals and the people preserving their working traditions.
